South African Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius must pay for killing his girlfriend, her father told a South African court on Tuesday, breaking down in tears.

He was found guilty of murdering Reeva Steenkamp after a court overturned an earlier manslaughter verdict.

The 29-year-old Paralympian gold medallist faces a minimum 15-year jail term after his manslaughter conviction for the 2013 killing, for which he originally received a five-year sentence, was upgraded on appeal.

The 73-year-old told Pretoria’s High Court that wife June had been able to forgive the double-amputee athlete. I just don’t wish that to anybody in this world,” the 73-year-old said. “You must understand why forgiving doesn’t exonerate you from the crime you committed,” he said.

A psychologist called by Pistorius’ lawyer, told the court on Monday – the first day of the hearing – that the athlete was “a broken man” on medication for depression… But prosecutor Gerrie Nel said Pistorius has shown no remorse for shooting and killing Steenkamp when he fired four shots through a locked toilet door in his Pretoria home.

Barry Steenkamp asked for photos of his daughter’s body to be made public so people could see the wounds.
