Mali prime minister resigns

By on March 31, 2011

Mali Prime Minister Modibo Sidibe resigned on Wednesday and a new government will be formed soon, President Amadou Toumani Toure said in a communique.

No reason was given for the resignation, which comes a year ahead of presidential elections. Toure has said he does not plan to stand in the 2012 polls.

“A new chapter of government action is beginning for the remainder of my mandate, and I am certain it will benefit from the accomplishments of your team,” Toure said in the statement issued to the media and addressed to Sidibe.

Sidibe had served as premier since 2007.

Toure has run the West African state, Africa’s third largest gold miner and a major regional cotton grower, since 2002, and won his second and final five-year term in 2007.

He has said repeatedly he does not intend to ammend the constitution to allow him to run for a third term.
