Kenya, 47 missing in supermarket fire
At least 47 people are missing after a fire yesterday at a supermarket in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, said Colonel Joseph Kingori, assistant director of the National Disaster Operations Center.
Removal of debris from the one storey building in the centre of Nairobi’s business district began last night and will be completed by the end of the day, Kingori told reporters today in the city.
“We are trying to retrieve whatever could be inside,” he said, adding that as of this morning, 26 males and 21 females were still missing.
Nairobi-based Capital FM reported that 12 bodies had been recovered from the building, a report which was denied by Kingori.
President Mwai Kibaki visited the site today and said the government will provide whatever assistance is necessary.
